Recycling anniversary sees retail boost
The fifth anniversary of the Recofloor vinyl flooring recycling scheme has seen it attract new retail members, and an increase in recycling.
The organisation held a series of events across the country last month to celebrate the anniversary and highlight the benefits of the scheme. Since it was set up in 2009 by Altro and Polyflor more than 1,900 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring has been diverted from landfill. And thanks to September's events, 42 tonnes was collected last month as a result of the greater awareness.
'These milestone events have been a tremendous success. Those who called in liked the birthday party feel and the balloons, cupcakes and Recofloor T-shirts went down well,' says Carla Eslava, Recofloor project officer (pictured), who attended several venues. 'On arriving at trade counters, many said "there must be a party going on". My explanation of how Polyflor and Altro's recycling scheme works generated a lot of interest and a number took away polythene bags to start recycling their waste vinyl flooring. They understood how it could be cost-effective for them and how recycling the material, instead of sending it to landfill, can save significantly on disposal costs.'
