Outdoor shines amid John Lewis sales falls
The weather was key for John Lewis last week, but weather related products such as BBQs and fans was not enough to prevent sales falling across all categories.
The chain saw sales drop by 5.6% to £76.2m in the week to 27 May.
‘While home sales were down 4.8%, the warmer weather resulted in record BBQ sales and a record week for outdoor living with sales up 54%,’ said Jon Williams, John Lewis merchandising operations director.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were down 6.8%, with a 2.3% uplift in small electricals due to a significant increase in the sale of fans.
‘Fashion sales were down 5.0%, due to annualising of strong price match promotions in the same week last year. Warm weather products in fashion saw a 15% uplift with a record week of sales for sandals up 26%.’
Home sales for the 17 week period were down 0.8%.
