Down, down, down: John Lewis suffers double-digit home sales fall
John Lewis saw a double-digit fall in home sales in the past week.
‘Home sales were down 11.3%, with sales affected by the earlier fall of Clearance in 2016. Outdoor living, however, continued it's strong performance with sales for the week up by 39% as customers made the most of the hot weather to spend time outside, ‘ said Maggie Porteous, John Lewis shop trade director.
Total sales in the week to 21 June fell by 0.5% to £96.17m. Home sales for the 21 week period are down 1.6%.
‘Fashion was up 1.5% with both mens and womens casualwear seeing double digit growth. Sales within the swimwear and nightwear category were also up, seeing an uplift of 26.5%, as customers prepare for their summer holidays. Beauty also had a good week, with sales rising by 9.8%.
‘Electricals and home technology sales for the week were strong, rising by 9.8%. It was a record week for small electricals, as sales of fans continued to soar due to the hot weather across the UK. Mobile and photography also enjoyed a strong week, with sales up 46.4%, driven by a compelling offer on the new red iPhone. Apple also helped drive a sales uplift of 13.3% in tablets and computers, with the new iPad proving popular with customers.’
