Furniture and flooring deliver home growth for John Lewis
Strong furniture and flooring sales helped John Lewis to a major turnaround in home sales in the past week.
Helped by the final week of its summer sale, John Lewis saw home sales rise by 1.9% in the week to 15 July. And what had been a position where home sales were down 1% in the 23 weeks to 8 July, become one where home sales were up by 2.6% in the 24 week period.
‘Total sales for the week, which was the last week of summer Clearance, were £86.4m, up 4% compared to last year. Sales of all departments grew,’ said Liz Mihell, John Lewis head of shop trade, London and south east.
‘Home sales were up 1.9% due to sales Clearance lines. Sales of furniture and flooring were particularly strong, ending the week up 5.8%.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 9.9% as customers made the most of Clearance offers. Communications technology, which includes mobile phones and tablets, saw sales grow by 29%. It was the strongest week so far this financial year for sales of photography equipment as customers began preparing for their summer holidays.
‘Fashion sales were up 1% with beauty, wellbeing and leisure sales growing the most followed by menswear. Casual menswear was most in demand due to the warm weather and customers buying clothing for their holiday wardrobes.’
