Bedroom shines amid home gloom for John Lewis
Bedroom furniture was a star performer for John Lewis in the past week, amid a large drop in home sales.
Although the chain saw an overall increase in sales of 1.7% as fashion and electrical and home technology enjoyed an uplift, home sales dropped by 6.3% in the week to 10 February.
‘Home sales were down 6.3%, although outdoor living had a positive start to the season. Upholstery also had a solid week, and bedroom furniture was up 16%,’ said Simon Russell, John Lewis director of retail operations development.
‘Fashion was up 2.1%, with womenswear driving sales at 5.4%. Cold weather clothing in particular performed well, 11% ahead of the same time last year. Women's accessories also enjoyed a strong week with sales growing 4.4%.
‘Electricals and home technology had a strong week, up 9.1%, largely driven by sales within audio and connected home. Elsewhere, Vision had a buoyant week with sales of OLED TVs a particular standout, and small electricals also enjoyed an uplift with sales of coffee machines continuing to perform well.’
Home sales for the two week period were down by 6.6%.
