Retail sales jumped in May
Both the value and volume of retail sales jumped in May, according to official figures.
The Office for National Statistics said the volume of retail sales in May was 3.9% higher than in May 2017 and 1.3% higher than in April 2017. The volumes of sales excluding fuel was 4.4% and 1.3% higher respectively.
The value of sales was 6.3% and 1.5% higher respectively. Excluding fuel, sales were 6.1% and 1.5% higher respectfully.
ONS said feedback from retailers suggested that a sustained period of good weather and Royal Wedding celebrations encouraged spending in food and household goods stores in May.
Household goods stores saw sales volumes rise 7.9% and value increase by 9.3%.
