Outdoor furniture and fizz: impact of weather and World Cup revealed
The impact of the continuing hot weather and England’s progress in the World Cup were demonstrated by sales at John Lewis last week.
Sales at John Lewis dropped by 0.3% in the week to 7 July.
Total sales for the week were down 0.3% on last year. ‘Sales were impacted by the very hot weather and the World Cup. Home sales were down 8.4%. However, the hot weather is continuing to drive strong sales of outdoor furniture and other weather related products such as water bottles and low tog duvets. We also saw customers taking advantage of Clearance offers, particularly on dining tables,’ said Dino Rocas, John Lewis operations director.
‘Fashion sales were up 4.6%. Sales were driven by Clearance offers, customers shopping for clothing to wear in the hot weather, as well as launches of new season ranges. The popularity of our new season own brand Kin collection sent sales of the brand up 88% on the same week last year.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 3.2%. Sales of small electricals were boosted by the continuing hot weather which sent sales of fans up 234% on the same week last year. Sales of refrigerators reached double-digit growth and TV sales were up 20% due to England’s performance in the World Cup.’
In contrast, sales at Waitrose rose by 4.2%, excluding fuel. ‘England’s football success helped drive champagne sales up 49% and sparkling wine was boosted 53% – the biggest week for fizz since Christmas 2017. Beer also performed strongly - up 36%, gin saw growth of 26% and cider up 16%. Crisps for sharing saw sales soar by 48% and handcooked crisps were up 20%. Frozen pizza had a great week too with sales up 24%. Ice was also in demand with a 92% uplift on last year,’ said Loraine Woodhouse, Waitrose finance director.
