John Lewis sees sales slip back
After recording its first increase on home sales in over a quarter, John Lewis saw sales slip back in the past week.
‘Home sales were down 7% [in the week to 8 September], but our contemporary own brand House had a record week with sales up 10.5% on last year, and there was strong demand for our new gifting range Find Keep Give and our new plant gift range Little Botanicals,’ said Maggie Porteous, John Lewis shop trade director.
‘Total sales for the week were down 4% on the same period last year, but we saw strong sales of our new own brand ranges which were supported by the launch of our new brand identity in shops and online.
‘Fashion sales were down 3.9% overall, however we saw very strong demand for our new John Lewis & Partners womenswear collection and shoe sales were up 8% on last year.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were down 2.2%. Gaming products had a strong week with sales up 231% on the same week last year.’
Home sales for the six week period were 3.5% lower.
