Mayfield to step down as John Lewis chairman

Sir Charlie Mayfield, John Lewis Partnership chairman is to step down in 2020.

Sir Charlie, the group’s fifth chairman in its nearly 100 year history, joined the Partnership in 2000 as head of business development and the Partnership board as development director in 2001. He was appointed John Lewis md in 2005 and Partnership chairman in 2007.

He began his career as an officer in the army before holding management roles at SmithKline Beecham and McKinsey & Co. He was knighted in 2013 for services to business.

‘Although my departure is still a considerable way off, the appointment of my successor is a key responsibility. It is for this reason I have decided to lay out the timetable now to enable an open and thorough process to select the next chairman of the Partnership,’ he said.

The new chairman will be announced in the second half of 2019.
