John Lewis saw pre-Christmas furniture and flooring upturn

John Lewis saw a healthy rise in furniture and flooring sales in the week before Christmas.

The chain saw sales rise by 5.6%: an increase in the home sector only out-performed by gift food sales in the week to 22 December. Given that this was the last few days before Christmas 2018, this is a very positive performance, as the chain’s official winter sale had not yet started.

‘Total sales for the week were up 4.2% on last year as customers bought last minute gifts and prepared their homes for the festive period,’ said Barry Matheson, John Lewis Head of Scotland and North shop trade.

‘Home sales were down 0.1% however furniture and flooring had a good week, up 5.6% and gift food saw sales up 6%.

‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 3.7%, driven by strong sales in communication technology and also mobile.

‘Fashion sales were up 7.2%. Sales were boosted by a fantastic week in menswear, up 11.6% and also strong sales in Beauty, Wellbeing and Leisure, up 8.3%. John Lewis own brand also performed well, with Kin womenswear up 45% and Modern Rarity up 43%.’

Home sales for the 21 week period were down 4.7%.
