John Lewis blames snow for sales fall
John Lewis said the drop in sales in the past week was because of the snow.
‘Total sales for the week [to 2 February] were down 4.4% on the same week last year due to the snow.
‘Home sales were down 6%. Sales of our new season, own brand House range [pictured] were up 7%, and sales of gifts rose by 7.8% as a result of customers beginning to shop for Valentine’s Day,’ said Laurence Mitchell, John Lewis electricals and home technology buying director.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were down 5.1%. Communications technology sales were up 4.5% primarily driven by demand for mobile phones and smartwatches. The snow increased sales of heating products, which were up 200% on last year.
‘Fashion sales were down 2.1%. Women’s accessories had another strong week with sales up 11.1% as customers bought items to keep warm. Sales of boots were up 100%. Own brand womenswear sales were up again on last year.’
