Beds and outdoor star for John Lewis
John Lewis enjoyed strong sales of outdoor furniture and beds in the past week, but it wasn’t enough to lift home sales into positive territory.
‘Home sales were down 3.9%. Outdoor furniture was up 13% as customers enjoyed shopping for woven and wooden furniture for their gardens ahead of the expected heatwave this week. Clearance also drove good sales of beds and bedding which were up 22% and 6% respectively,’ says Christine Kasoulis, John Lewis fashion buying director.
‘Total sales for the week [to 22 June] were down 2.4% on the same week last year. The first week of Clearance started well but sales slowed at the weekend due to the warmer weather.
‘Fashion sales were down 0.1%. However, womenswear sales were up 4.5% and menswear sales were up 2.9% compared to the same period last year. We also saw strong demand for nursery products which were up 5.8% as we price matched a competitor’s promotional activity.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were down 4.4%. Large electrical sales were up 7%, driven by sales of DIY and gardening products that were up 42%. Communications technology was also up 2.8% on the same period last year.’
Home sales for the 21 week period were down by 4%.
