Decorating moves fail to lift John Lewis

JLRugsJohn Lewis suffered another week of lower home sales, despite increases in decorative accessories.

‘Total sales for the week were down 2.7 % on the same week last year, says Jon Williams, John Lewis merchandising operations director.

‘Home sales were down 7.1%, however, customers were refreshing their homes with decorative touches as we saw rugs up 17%, mirrors up 4% and art up 6%. 

‘Fashion sales were up 5.8%, driven by sales of womenswear which were up 21.7% and womens’ accessories which were up 8.3%.  We also saw customers buying new season items with AW womenswear up 5%.

‘Electrical and home technology sales were down 6.6% as we competed with a strong week of environmental care product sales including fans and air purifiers alongside last week’s cooler weather.'
