Promotions and Christmas provide boost for John Lewis
The final days of a 20% off promotion helped John Lewis deliver a double-digit rise in home sales in the past week.
'Total sales were up 11.9% on the same week last year [to 12 October] as customers purchased new season items due to cooler weather and enjoyed shopping promotional events across home and fashion,’ says Laurence Mitchell, John Lewis electricals and home technology buying director.
‘Home sales were up 13.8% as customers begin to prepare their homes for the festive season, with Christmas product up 25%: shaped and animal baubles are currently outselling round baubles seven to one. Furniture and flooring was up 7.4% and carpets were up 26%.
‘Fashion sales were up 13.7% as customers enjoyed shopping our fashion promotion, which started on Friday. Womenswear was up 28% and menswear was up 25.9%, as the cooler weather saw customers buying new season products. Cashmere overall was up 48%.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 9.5%. Small electricals sales were up 8.4% which was driven by personal care, with hair dryers proving popular as customers continued to combat the wet weather.’
