Sale helps John Lewis
The first full week of its winter sale helped John Lewis lift sales in the past week, but home disappointed.
‘Total sales were up 3.3% [in the week to 4 January] on last year in what was the first full week of Clearance,’ says Craig Inglis, John Lewis customer director.
‘Home sales were down 0.5%. However, textiles and home accessories sales were up 3.4% and sales across gifts, cook and dine were up 3.4% as customers enjoyed shopping for strong Clearance offers across cookware and tabletop.
‘Fashion sales were up 6.4%, with womenswear up 10% and womenswear accessories up 22.6%. Sales of beauty, wellbeing and leisure were up 4.3% and menswear sales were up 2.5%.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 4.4%. Communications technology sales were up 0.4% and sales of electricals were up 6.8% as customers shopped for personal care and smart home products.’
Home sales for the 49-week period were down 2.5%.
