Footfall slips back

Non-food retail footfall slipped back in the past week.

Footfall was 16.5% lower than in 2019, according to the Ipsos Retail Traffic Index for 16-22 May. 

This compared with a drop of 14.4% the week before.

Retail parks continued to be the preferred location for shoppers, with footfall down 9.7% on 2019 levels. Shopping centres saw a 17.6% fall while high streets saw footfall decline by a fifth.

Scotland and Northern Ireland saw the highest decline, 19.6%, while northern England saw the smallest decline, 15.8%.
