Ikea urges Milan visitors to Make Room For Life
Ikea is to host a design festival during Salone del Mobile, urging visitors to Milan to Make Room For Life.
The retailer is to take over a 37,660sqft warehouse in the city’s Lambrate district, with four stages, each one exploring a different aspect of the Ikea philosophy and vision from 4-9 April.
The Soft Spot stage is a calm and cocooning space for hanging out and recharging. After stretching out in the morning with acro yoga, the Soft Spot’s afternoon programme boasts captivating musical performances including Teenage Engineering - a digital, collaborative music performance that allows the audience to join in thanks to a system of interactive speaker walls built into Ikea products.
In addition, ‘Sofa Talks’ is a programme of seminars that will be delivered by a roster of inspirational speakers including Tom Dixon and Hay who will discuss issues connected to lifestyle, life at home and design.
The Rooms For Life stage features an interactive set made up of different living rooms styled by experts such as Faye Toogood, Open House and Pella Hedeby. Each room will introduce new Ikea launches in a unique way through different moods.
The Ikea Today stage offers a behind-the-scenes look at product development. Visitors can meet the designers, developers and engineers behind the products and discover their latest work. Workshops and prototyping sessions include Robot painting hosted by Swiss design students and masterclasses with the likes of Tom Dixon.
Located outside of the warehouse, a pop-up restaurant called the Ikea Food Market will serve up an Italian take on Swedish meatballs as well as drinks and Swedish ‘fika’ - coffee and cake Swedish style. Guests can stop by the Food Stage throughout the week to take part in food labs or relax in the Dezeen Lounge. All days will end with a music performance by Teenage Engineering Sound system and on Wednesday Dezeen will host a party in the space.
In addition to its four stages, Let’s Make Room For Life will have a series of events and installations such as a light show made using pieces from Ikea smart lighting and the Ikea Art Event, which will provide guests with the opportunity to doodle next to artist Kevin Lyons. Snaking through the space, a giant slide called Carpet Ride will provide thrill seeking guests with an alternative view of the festival.
Open from 10am – 8pm, the Ikea Festival will be located at Officina Ventura 14, Via Privata Giovanni Ventura 14, Lambrate.
