Triple boost for John Lewis
Sales in John Lewis’s three buying groups all saw growth in the past week, helped by a near double-digiit furniture and flooring increase and strong online sales.
‘Home sales were up 11%, with textiles and home accessories enjoying the strongest week, seeing sales rise by 16.3%. Furniture and flooring also saw a good week of sales growth, up 8.4%,’ said Sienne Veit, John Lewis online product director.
‘Total sales for the week [to 22 July] were £79.8m, up 8.9%. Both online and branches saw strong sales, with online traffic seeing one of its biggest weeks of the year.
‘Fashion sales for the week were strong, up 15.5% on the same week last year. Womenswear in particular enjoyed a successful week, seeing sales rise by 34.5%, with new own-label denim lifestyle brand, AND/OR, a stand out. Elsewhere, beauty, wellbeing and leisure also had a good week with sales up 13.4%, driven by strong sales at our beauty counters.
‘Electricals and home technology sales were up 2.1% for the week. Tablets and computers enjoyed a particularly strong week, up 23%, driven by sales of the MacBook Air and 10 inch iPads. Sales within vision also saw double-digit growth, driven by the launch of the new Samsung TV.’
Home sales for the 25 week period are down 0.5%.
