Home helps lift John Lewis
Home sales rose at John Lewis in the past week, with increases across many product categories.
‘Total sales for the week [to 19 August] were up 5.7% [at £77.07m] and, as in the previous week, sales of all departments grew faster than in the same week last year,’ said Alison Smith, John Lewis head of shop trade, south and west.
‘Home sales were up 3%. The changing weather encouraged sales of bedding and lighting and we also saw an increase in furniture and flooring sales.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 8.2%. Parents preparing for children going back to school and off to university helped drive a 13% increase in year on year sales of communications technology products such as computers and iPads.
‘Fashion sales were up 7.3%. This was mainly due to summer products being marked down, and the cooler weather driving demand for new season warm clothing. Womenswear sales were up 14.3% and menswear sales were up 5%.’
Total sales for the three week period are up by 5.7%, with home sales up 3.3%.
