Be together

Membership brings a voice, benefits and support

Greendale Carpets & Flooring isa member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative supporting independent flooring retailers across the UK. Founded in 1962, it was created by retailers
who understood that by working together, they could achieve more than they could alone.

‘A cooperative is special because it exists for the benefit of its members. Every member has a stake in the business, and every decision is focused on helping independent retailers remain competitive, profitable and confident in their local markets,’ says Eamonn Prescott, Greendale Carpets & Flooring chief executive.

Unlike a conventional supplier or buying group, Greendale is owned by the retailers it serves. Members combine their purchasing power to secure strong terms from leading manufacturers while retaining their own identity, independence and customer relationships.

‘Independent retailers are at the heart of our industry. They bring expertise, personal service and trust to their communities. Our role is to give them the strength of a national organisation without taking away what makes them independent,’ says Prescott.

For retailers, joining a cooperative means gaining access to better buying terms, exclusive ranges, own-label branding, merchandising support, marketing tools, sampling, customer service and a network of like-minded businesses. Greendale’s central warehouse, long-standing supplier relationships and cooperative structure allow members to buy with confidence and compete effectively against their larger rivals.

‘The power of Greendale is that members are not simply customers: they are part of the organisation. They share in its direction, benefit from its buying strength and contribute to
a community built around mutual success. That sense of shared purpose is what makes cooperatives different. Profits are not extracted for external shareholders: instead, value is reinvested into services, support and better outcomes for members. The model encourages collaboration rather than competition between retailers, helping them learn from one another and strengthen the independent flooring sector,’ he says.

‘Retailers should join a cooperative because it gives them a voice, a support network and a commercial advantage. At Greendale, members work for themselves, but they are never working alone.’
