Empty shop numbers rise

The number of empty shops has risen, with shopping centres particularly hard hit.

Some 14.5% of stores are unoccupied according to the British Retail Consortium Local Data Company Vacancy Monitor.

This compares with a rate of 14.1% in the first quarter of the year.

Shopping centres were the poorest performers, with a vacancy rate of 19.4%, with more than one in eight stores having been empty for more than a year.

High streets had a vacancy rate of 14.5% and retail parks 11.5%.
