Footfall 20% lower as heat hits shopping

Retail non-food footfall fell back in the past week as the consumers followed advice to stay out of the sun amid high temperatures.

Footfall was 20.4% lower than in 2019, in the week to 17 July: up from the 19.9% the previous week.

Retail parks was again the best performing sector, with footfall 18.2% lower than 2019 (-17.3%), followed by high streets which fell 19.5% (-20.4%) and shopping centres, which saw a 22.6% (-21.7%) decline, according to Ipsos’ Retail Traffic Index.

Northern England was the best performer at -16.6% (-16.6%) with Scotland and Northern Ireland the worst, with footfall 22.5% lower (-19.3%).
