Footfall plunges at centres and high streets

Shopping centres and high streets saw retail footfall drop by a quarter compared with 2019 last week.

According to figures from Ipsos’s Retail Traffic Index, shopping centres saw footfall 25.6% lower in the week to 23 January, with high streets seeing a 25% drop.

Retail parks saw a 14.2% decline.

London and the South East saw the largest drop, 28%, followed by Scotland and Northern Ireland, 26.2%; Midlands, 23.2%; Wales and South West, 19.8% and  Northern England 17.5%.

The UK average fall was 20.9%.
