Footfall shrugs off heatwave

Retail non-food footfall proved its resilience amid the heatwave.

Footfall was 20.2% lower than in 2019, in the week to 14 July: an improvement on the 20.4% drop the previous week.

Retail parks was again the best performing sector, with footfall 19.3% lower than 2019 (-18.2%), followed by high streets which fell 19.6% (-19.5%) and shopping centres, which saw a 20.3% (-22.6%) decline, according to Ipsos’ Retail Traffic Index.

Northern England was the best performer at -17.7% (-16.6%) with London and the South-East the worst, with footfall 22.1% lower (-20.1%).
