Ikea makes shipping pledge

Ikea says it plans to switch to zero-carbon fuel shipping by 2040.

The group says it wants to encourage other companies to follow suit as part of the Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels plan. Cargo shipping reportedly produces 1bn tonnes of climate pollution each year – as much as Germany.

Ikea has about 2m shipments a year with transport from suppliers to stores accounting for 5% of its carbon footprint.

‘We need to accelerate the transformation towards zero emission ocean shipping. By collaborating with like-minded partners, we can create strong movements,’ says Elisabeth Munck af Rosenschöld, Ikea sustainability manager supply chain operations.

‘With this ambition statement, we want to demonstrate our determination to reach set targets and to instil confidence among all stakeholders on the direction of our common decarbonising journey ahead.’

Ikea says it is committed to becoming climate positive by 2030 by reducing more greenhouse gas emissions than the value chain emits, while growing the business.
