The funeral of Paolo Boffi took place on 20 May, after he died aged 85.
Born in 1939 in Cesano Maderno, in Italy’s industrial heartland, he, together with his brothers Dino and Pier Ugo, was the driving force behind the transformation of the small family workshop — founded by his father Piero in 1934 — into an internationally renowned company.
‘From a small workshop to a leading design company, the leap was made possible thanks to his dynamically visionary and courageous entrepreneurial style. With remarkable sensitivity and interpersonal skills, he was able to choose exceptional individuals with whom to share this journey,’ says the company.
In 1989 he recruited Roberto Gavazzi as md and began to step back from the day to day running of the company, and recognised the potential of a very young Piero Lissoni, who still serves as art director. Together, they developed a visionary business model that became a benchmark in the history of Italian design.
As honorary chairman, devoted himself to an innovative project focused on environmental and technological development.
‘We remember him for his passion for innovation in production processes and his tireless research, always aimed at new design discoveries and beyond. With Signor Paolo—as everyone in the company called him—also leaves his vibrant personality and ever-curious mind, never still, always seeking new inspiration and challenges.
We thank him for his significant contribution to the Made in Italy legacy, for his quick wit, and for the humility of someone who helped shape such an important story, above all by giving credit to those who stood beside him throughout the journey.’
He was buried in Cesano Maderno, where he had served in local politics.
