Retail footfall down a fifth in July

Retail parks were the better performing retail format in July, while towns proved much more popular with shoppers that cities. 

Non-food retail footfall was 19.5% lower than in July 2019, according to Ipsos’ Retail Traffic Index.

Footfall was down by 16.9% in retail parks, 19.8% in high streets and 20.7% in shopping centres.

Cities saw footfall drop by 24.3% compared with a fall of 13.8% in towns.

Regional performance varied from -17.2% in Northern England to -22.1% in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
