Retailers get April re-opening target

Non-essential retailers in England will be allowed to re-open from 12 April, if the UK Government’s pandemic projections follow its forecasts.

However events that would see the gathering of more than two households, such as exhibitions or conferences will have to wait until the ending of all restrictions, on 21 June at the earliest.

The Prime Minister says that retailers will be given a week’s notice if they will be allowed to re-open or stay closed.

A ‘events research programme’ with pilots to test the effects of larger crowds and or reduced social distancing will start in April.

The Scottish Government is due to announce its plans tomorrow; the Welsh First Minister has said non-essential retail could open on 15 March but there will not be a ‘wholesale’ reopening, while in Northern Ireland restrictions are in place until at least 1 April.
