As material costs fluctuate and environmental scrutiny increases, furniture manufacturers are under pressure to rethink the materials they rely on, particularly padding and comfort layers. Non-woven wadding is used extensively across upholstery and interiors, yet
much of the market remains dependent on virgin polyester, overseas supply chains and oil-linked pricing.
Reborn – The Sustainable Manufacturer says its non-woven wadding is a commercially viable alternative, manufactured from post- consumer mattress textiles and recovered fibre waste. ‘Companies don’t want compromise. They want a pad that runs consistently, prices predictably and performs exactly as expected. Circularity only works if the material works. Reborn has been engineered to meet production expectations first, with sustainability built in: not the other way around,’ says Paul Beckett, Reborn – The Sustainable Manufacturer director.
‘Reborn non-woven wadding is designed as a direct replacement for conventional non-woven pads in many furniture applications. It delivers stable structure, controlled loft and resilience, with consistent roll quality and hygiene control. Manufactured using a low-energy dry-laid process with thermal bonding and contamination management, the product is already in live supply.
‘It is not a pilot or development material. Key benefits for buyers include reliable UK supply; shorter lead times; technical support at source; reduced exposure to imported raw materials, and measurable carbon and landfill savings.’
The company says that independent analysis indicates a carbon impact up to 63% lower compared to virgin polyester wadding, with additional benefits around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) readiness and end-of-life recoverability.
‘Our access to post-consumer mattress textiles through our linked recycling operations gives the business something many circular suppliers lack: secure, traceable feedstock at scale. Manufacturers increasingly ask two questions: can you supply consistently and can you prove where the material comes from? We can answer yes to both.’
Interest in Reborn non-woven wadding is being driven by three commercial realities: rising costs and volatility in virgin fibres; increased customer and retailer scrutiny, and incoming EPR requirements, says Beckett.
‘This isn’t about future legislation. It’s about buying a better pad now.’
