Online purchasing of mattresses continued to grow in the second half of 2021, despite stores being open.
The National Bed Federation’s latest consumer survey of people who had bought a mattress or bed in the past six months carried out in November, found that 61% purchased online, up from 55% reported in the last pre-Covid survey.
The survey also found that while 76% used the Internet as their primary source of research prior to purchase, 45% also like to visit one or more stores.
But while satisfaction levels are high, with 95% of consumers are satisfied with both the comfort and quality of their new mattress, the findings suggest a link between what people spend and how long they keep it for. Some 41% are replacing their old mattresses in five years or less, with more than half saying the bed is worn out (33%) or uncomfortable (21%). Some 46% spent a maximum of £399 and 75% under £800.
‘We know that choosing a new mattress is considered by many people to be quite a high-risk purchase as comfort is so subjective. Such a high level of satisfaction with both the comfort and quality of their new mattress is testament to the hard work of the whole supply chain in the bed industry,’ says Simon Williams, NBF head of marketing and membership.
Some 510 individuals broadly representative of the population by age, gender and region were interviewed for the survey.
