Upholstery is going green

Green is the up and coming fabric upholstery shade, as grey sees its popularity with shoppers continue to wane.

According to upholstery chain King Living, consumer preferences have shifted dramatically in the past six years.

Whereas grey (52%), neutral (15%) and blue/navy (14%) were the most popular colours across its customers in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, Singapore, and Malaysia in 2019, this has shifted to neutral (45%), green (18%) and grey (10%).

Green accounted for 1% of sales in 2019.

Blue hues have remained popular, now accounting for 9% of sales, while brown is the choice of almost 7% of shoppers.

For leather upholstery, the King Living’s most popular colours are unchanged from 2019, but popularity has. Brown has seen its domination of the sector fall from 60% to 53%, neutrals are fairly static at 24% (21%) and grey is unchanged at 11%.

‘There’s a strong emotional pull to natural tones. They connect us to the outdoors, bringing a sense of calm and serenity into the home. Browns and greens are resonating globally because they ground us. It’s no longer about following a colour trend of the year, but curating palettes that feel human, expressive, and deeply personal,’ says Rodney Misso, King Living head of brand environment.

The figures also demonstrate the importance of what is on the shop floor. ‘The launch of the 1977 sofa, frequently styled in Leura Mangrove – a green toned fabric, has driven 21% of all green sofa sales. Likewise, the Richmond Spice fabric, a rich terracotta hue that balances red and brown tones rose to popularity after being featured on the Zaza sofa in showrooms worldwide. The colours we display can shape customer perception showroom styling can directly influence what becomes most loved.’
