90 years ago today, four young idealists set out to create a new kind of furniture company. Their aim? To improve everyday living, bring modern art and design to Finland, and share the best that Finland had to offer to the world. Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, Nils-Gustav Hahl founded Artek.
To mark the anniversary, the brand is re-introducing classics from its archive that are celebratory in both form and function.
Several Alvar Aalto designs, long absent from production, return to the Artek collection: some as limited anniversary editions, others as permanent additions.
The ‘X-leg’, one of the most sought-after Aalto design elements among collectors, appears in the form of a limited edition Stool X602. Just 90 versions of each of the two curly birch variants will be made available, to mark 90 years of Artek.
Meanwhile, Cabinet 250 returns to the Artek collection. The cocktail cabinet, as it has often been known, is one of many elegant storage solutions created by Alvar and his wife, during their period of prolific creativity in the 1930s.
Screen 100, a striking embodiment of Aalto’s signature free-flowing, organic forms, is again available in a range of heights to suit the diverse needs of modern living.
