Flooring inflation sees rate slow despite smooths rise

Retail inflation for flooring dropped in July, reaching its lowest rate in a year.

The rate for carpet and other floorcoverings dropped from 8.3% to 6.4% in July, according to ONS data. 

This compares with 8% in July 2021.

The decrease was driven by carpets and rugs, which saw the annual rate drop from 7% to 4.9%. In July 2021 it was 7%.

In contrast, smooth flooring saw the rate climb from 15.2% to 16.9%. July 2021 it was 12.2% and since August 2021 it has never been lower than 13.9% (December 2021) and reaching 21% in May.
