Flooring inflation slows but smooths see large jump

The rate of retail flooring inflation dropped in June but it is still higher than a year ago.

The annual rate for carpets and other flooring dropped from 10.3% to 9.1%, but still higher than the 8.3% seen in June 2022.

The past eight consecutive months have seen the rate at 9% or higher.

Downwards contributions came from carpets and rugs, where the rate dropped from 11.5% to 9.4%: the rate was 7% in June 2022.

Smooth flooring continued its unpredictable pattern: after dropping from 15.3% in April to 5.4% in May, it rose to 10.3% in June, according to Office for National Statistics data.

10 of the past 12 months have seen the rate in double-digits, with an average of 16.7% for the past year.
