Furniture inflation drops again

Retail price inflation for furniture fell again in September.

The rate for household furniture dropped from 4.2% in August to 3.4%.

The past year has seen the rate fall steadily from 14.1%. In 2022 the rate averaged 14.9%.

The Office for National Statistics said the main cause of the fall had been lower mattress prices.

The rate for garden furniture fell from 5.8% to 5.1%, semi-reversing the jump seen in August.

Lighting saw the rate increase, from 2.9% to 3.6%, but still half of what was seen a year ago.
