Landlords could be forced to accept tenants once a store has been empty for six months, under ‘levelling up’ proposals.
Local authorities will be able to force landlords to rent out commercial property through a Compulsory Rental Auction, under the new plan, allowing community groups and small businesses to take over stores.
According to the Daily Mail, the new powers will be introduced as part of the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, which will be unveiled in the Queen’s Speech next month.
According to the Local Data Company one in seven stores are empty.
