AI, gender inclusion, diversity and sustainability will be some of the themes covered at next month’s Inspiring Makers event as it looks to inspire future generations of craftspeople to promote hand skills and preserve the legacy of craft.
Now in its fourth year, the not-for-profit day, previously called The New Makers’ Conference, is organised by interiors brand Artichoke and The Furniture Makers’ Company. With the decline of the UK’s master furniture makers over past 150 years, Inspiring Makers offers a unique platform for emerging talent to connect with peers as well as some of the UK’s influential experts.
Attendees can expect engaging topical discussions with this year’s speakers including: Bruce Hodgson, Artichoke founder; Sean Sutcliffe, Benchmark founder and chairman; Camilla McLean, Greg Stone and Katy Thompson, Matthew Cox md, creative development lead and junior furniture maker/finisher respectively; Selena Bolingbroke, The Building Crafts College principle and John Orchard, Woodland Heritage chief executive.
‘As heritage makers, we are committed to nurturing talent and preserving traditional handcrafting techniques for the future. Artistry and technical skill at our level can take decades in the making which is why it’s so important to encourage young people into the craft. Along with our other educational initiatives such as apprenticeships, Inspiring Makers helps to encourage, train and sustain the dedicated masters of the future,’ says Hodgson. Certainly, this year’s event will be another success and inspiring for all.”
‘We are very excited to once again be partnering with Artichoke on the fourth Inspiring Makers event. Join us for a day filled with ideas, advice and encouragement for new makers, featuring insights from industry torchbearers. This event is perfect for any emerging maker, young or old, looking to advance their career in furniture. It’s an opportunity to listen to experts, network with peers and connect with leaders in our sector. On behalf of The Furniture Makers’ Company, I would like to thank Artichoke, along with Axminster Tools, Halstock and Ergochair, for sponsoring this inspirational day. We look forward to seeing you there.,’ says David Dewing, The Furniture Makers’ Company south west region chairman.
Inspiring Makers takes place from 9am-5pm on 8 May at Guildhall, Bath. Tickets cost £15 can be purchased through Eventbrite.
