John Lewis is proposing to increase the number of staff on the shopfloor, but the reorganisation will see more than 150 jobs go.
The department store chain wants to bring its front and back of house roles together, which it says will enable greater flexibility and allow improved customer service during busy periods.
Staff will be given headsets to remove the need to leave customers to find colleagues, mini-printers so they can replace missing shelf-edge labels and the ability to accept card payments, removing the need for customers to find a manned till.
However, the shake-up will see 153 jobs lost, which it hopes to tackle through not replacing staff and voluntary redundancies.
Peter Ruis, John Lewis executive director told The Sunday Times last month that shopfloor staffing levels had been cut back too much.
