Wightman name set for return

A Suffolk flooring, beds and soft furnishings retailer which closed earlier this year after 163 years is set for a comeback.

H Wightman & Son in Bungay closed its doors in June. Next month the name will return to the town as a flooring store.

Wightman & Co Flooring will operate from the town’s Market Place, the same location as the original store.

James Wightman, the son of the previous owner John Wightman, has joined with Neville Howgate, and Tom Patrick to open the business.

He says the premises are too small to sell beds or furniture but ‘it will be running the same just under Wightman & Co Flooring,’ he told the Beccles and Bungay Journal.

The original business was established by Henry Wightman in 1861 was run by six generations of the family.
